Having a small home with a growing family can be challenging as we tend to accumulate new things and have difficulty getting rid of old ones.
With two kids in school, and a new baby who is taking over with swings, playpens, and toys, it is easy to feel like I am losing control, and as an Interior Designer, it felt like a slap in the face.
I’ve come to understand that the first thing to do is work on the mind, to achieve clarity, be present, and appreciate the moment, so I can then focus on building the picture of what I want and move forward to create it.
In a small home, no space can be left wasted, any corner can become functional and serve a purpose. So, with that in mind, I started to imagine a Homework / Crafts space.
Revising what currently goes on and how things work in my home when the kids arrive from school the first thing they do is go to the Dining Room, where we talk about the day, have our meals together, and do homework and crafts. Usually, at the end of the day, the dining table is full of bowls, cups, books, markers, tablets, you name it…
After a few sketches and running some numbers, I realized that the room was big enough to add a desk along the side wall. I envisioned drawer cabinets with wheels that could move as needed and baskets for everyday crafts. Thought of all the cute drawings my kids make and the perfect way to display them.
After sourcing all the parts and pieces, and getting to work, I loved the finished product! Now, to the next step of training the kiddos to make sure everything goes back to its place.
